2022 Genesis Invitational Round 3 Betting & Showdown Picks

Joaquin Niemann continued his domination of the typically challenging Riviera Country Club by setting the new 36-hole scoring record of 16-under par. After opening with an 8-under 63 on Thursday, he matched that number on Friday and heads into the weekend with a two-shot lead over rookie Cameron Young. Young had the round of the day, shooting a sparkling bogey-free 9-under 62. Justin Thomas is in solo third place, five shots behind Niemann. More star-power rounds out the top-seven with Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Cameron Smith. But the headline remains Niemann, who is the current overwhelming betting favorite to win at +110. The good news for those trailing Niemann is that over the past 13 events here at Riviera, only once has the 36-hole leader actually won the tournament. With even firmer and faster conditions expected on the weekend, the chances of Niemann coming back to earth are high. While he is currently nine shots back, Viktor Hovland (+3200) has the firepower and presents the best value to make a run at Niemann.

Rory McIlroy (+110) Over K.H. Lee and Carlos Ortiz

Risk: 2 Units on BetMGM.

Rory McIlroy enters the weekend with another underachieving early-round performance thus far. He lost strokes ball-striking on Friday, only shooting 1-under. He is 13 shots off the lead. The good news? It’s Saturday, where he is the most dominant third-round performer on Tour, gaining an average of 2.3 strokes on the field. He also has a strong Strokes Gained Rating advantage over his counterparts in K.H. Lee and Carlos Ortiz.

Scottie Scheffler (+100) Over Beau Hossler and Nick Watney

Risk: 1.5 Units on BetMGM.

Scottie Scheffler has admitted to feeling a bit worn down after his emotional first Tour victory last weekend. Nevertheless, this matchup versus a couple of Tour lightweights in Beau Hossler and Nik Watney is too good to pass up. While Watney’s ball-striking has been impressive it will most likely regress tomorrow as the course gets firmer and faster. Hossler has been relying almost solely on his short game. Scheffler dominates both in historical “Saturday” scoring and should have enough left in the tank to overcome both opponents in this matchup.
